Creating a Stop ListThe database is provided with a collection of some of the most common stop words already in the ‘Stop List’ (SL). This will suffice for general practice but may require additional terms to be added to suit the context of the documents you are indexing. For each stop term you wish to add select ‘Add Word’ from the ‘Stop List’ menu. Similarly, for every word you wish to remove select ‘Remove Word’ from the menu. If you have a large collection of documents you wish to index that focus on a theme, it may be beneficial to add high frequency terms to the SL. For instance, a site or folder with a large collection of documents about cars, almost allwould use the term car at least once. This makes searching pointless. Alternatively, if you index a catalogue of products such as household goods, adding the term brush might appear sensible, but visitors are likely to use that as part of a multiple word search for things such as ‘outdoor brush’. Its presence would make the results more relevant. Use your discretion and think whether the term you are adding will add to or hinder a search. |
